Who is UFC flyweight possibility Mariya Agapova?
Mariya Agapova enters her UFC debut with an 8-1 record after signing with the promotion in February. On Saturday, Agapova will take on Hannah Cifers. Cifers steps in for Melissa Gatto on less than two weeks notice after Cifers’ most recent bout, losing to Mackenzie Dern in May.
Agapova has had a fast start to her MMA career, as she has three KO/TKO’s and three submissions to her name. Notable wins include Na Liang, Liliya Kazak, Yulia Kutsenko, and Dariya Kutzova. Her last bout came in October of 2019, where she made quick work against Marilla Santos, stopping her via first-round TKO. Agapova‘s lone blemish came at the hands of Tracy Cortez on DWCS.
How does Agapova stack up against the competition?
Currently, the flyweight division is supremely dominated by Valentina Shevchenko, as she continues to establish her reign as one of MMA’s best.
With the division at running thin on contenders, Agapova’s presence may just be what the UFC needs to give flyweight some momentum for the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.
The current rankings have four former title challengers in the top-10, and a win for Agapova could bump her up in her next appearance. At No. 8, Vivane Araujo sports an 8-2 record and simply lost to former title opposition and UFC Vegas 2 headliner Jessica Eye in December of2019 Araujo does not have an opponent lined up rather yet, however it’s a match that makes a great deal of sense if Agapova can get past Cifers, considering their records and typical challengers in and out of the UFC.
In the meantime, only time will inform, as Cifers and Agapova are set to heading the initial part of the event, starting at 6 p.m. EST as part of a 12- battle card and the seventh event considering that the UFC’s month-long hiatus.
