The Bachelor: US reality show casts its first black lead

US reality show The Bachelor has actually picked its first black lead to front the show.

Matt James, 28, will front the extremely popular dating program when it airs next year.

The ABC show has actually aired for 18 years without having an African-American male in the main role.

It followed legal representative Rachel Lindsay – who was the first black female to lead spin- off The Bachelorette in 2017 – threatened to distance herself from the show unless it got a “diversity makeover”.

Discussing his casting on Excellent Early morning America, James, an estate representative and business owner, stated it was a “step in the right direction”.

“When Rachel speaks, we listen,” he stated. “She has an extremely crucial voice in all of this, being the first black woman/person of colour to have a lead.

“So I think that we’re all following suit in that conversation, and this is hopefully the first of many black men to be in the position that I’m at now.”

The Bachelor features a single male who needs to pick in between a swimming pool of women, with the supreme goal of getting wed.

It is a popular culture phenomenon in the US, however has actually brought in installing criticism for a viewed absence of variety.

Ahead of the 25 th season in 2021, fans introduced a petition requiring a black lead in addition to having at least 35% black, native and people of colour as candidates each season.

Following the news of James’ casting, the show’s executive manufacturers stated they will make “significant changes” to attend to the absence of variety.

They added: “We are taking favorable actions to broaden variety in our cast, in our personnel and, most significantly, in the relationships that we show on tv.

” We can and will do much better to show the world around us and show all of its gorgeous stories.”
