Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of the social network Twitter, sold his first tweet in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) for USD 2.9 million to a Malaysian businessman.

The sale took place this Monday, March 22, 2021. Two weeks have elapsed since the digital auction of the publication began on the Valuables platform.

Dorsey’s first tweet was written in March 2006 and it says “ just setting up my twttr ” (“just setting up my Twitter”). The auction winner was Bridge Oracle CEO Sina Stavi. He surpassed Tron founder Justin Sun, who was also interested in acquiring it.

Sun, on March 6, he presented his first offer for this tweet. “Hi Jack, I made an offer for half a million dollars to buy your first tweet,” he wrote. Minutes later he improved it: “I have updated my offer to USD 2 million.”

Dorsey’s publication, which dates back 15 years, was traded as a token non-fungible , a certificate of authenticity confirming that the object is real and unique by recording details on a blockchain.

Non-fungible tokens are digital files or tokenized versions of the real world that have the particularity of not being interchangeable with each other and can function as proof of authenticity and ownership within a world

The resources of the auction were donated to a foundation

Dorsey posted on his Twitter account that the amount raised was converted to bitcoin (BTC), and later donated to the GiveDirectly’s Africa Response fund. This charitable organization raises funds to support African families that were economically affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The businessman published a proof of shipment on his social network account and reported that the money was already in the possession of the beneficiary organization. From Give Directly they appreciated the donation. “We hope to put this money in the hands of the recipients soon,” they added.

Increases NFT demand

The sale of Dorsey’s tweet for a millionaire sum is not an isolated case. NFTs have been in high demand recently in the world of collectibles. For example, a few days ago, the Turkish sports team Galatasaray was listed on the fantasy football platform Sorare. Thus, players like the Colombian Radamel Falcao, Fernando Musiera and Ryan Babel come to the world of non-fungible tokens.

Also the American actress and model Lyndsay Lohan has been seduced by the NFT to the point of launching their own tokens, based on the Ethereum blockchain, a fact reported by CriptoNoticias. In that case, Lohan’s NFTs were launched through the Rarible digital asset market.
