Toyota Yaris is the European Car of the Year
Toyota City won the award for the second time
The Toyota Yaris was elected the European Car of the Year 2021. The model that helped rejuvenate the Japanese brand in 1999, is in the fourth generation and won the trophy in a highly disputed vote among the seven finalist models.
Yaris took first place with 266 points, thus conquering his second European Car of the Year title, after reaching the award for the first time in 2000, beating the electric Fiat 500 which was second with 240 points, while the Cupra Formentor was third with 239 points.
Volkswagen ID.3, finished in fourth position with 224 points, ahead of Skoda Octavia, who was fifth with 199 points. The Land Rover Defender with 164 points and the Citroën C4, with 143 points, occupied the following positions, in the vote of 59 specialized journalists from 22 European countries.
In this way, Yaris succeeds Peugeot 2008, which won the title of Car of the Year in 2020.
The new Yaris using the new GA-B platform , has three petrol engines: 1.0 liters with a five-speed manual gearbox, 1.5 liters with a 6-speed manual gearbox and the hybrid version, also with a 1.5-liter petrol engine, with CVT automatic gearbox.
The new hybrid model uses the latest evolution of electrified motorization with the fourth full-hybrid system generation of the Japanese brand, providing Yaris, according to Toyota, with better fuel economy, lower emissions and a much higher capacity to circulate only with electric power, at higher speeds and greater distances.
So the 1.5 block of 3 cylinders and 90 hp of petrol power, joins an 80 hp electric motor, providing a combined power of 116 hp. A second electric motor to start the gasoline engine and to charge the battery in recovery situations.
This hybrid system adopts a new hybrid lithium-ion battery with an increase in power delivery that allows faster acceleration of the vehicle.
