Toofan: The real reason why Farhan Akhtar starrer hasn’t been able to see the light of day yet [Exclusive]
This March will mark one year since the shoot of Farhan Akhtar’s upcoming boxing drama, Toofan, would be completed. The film was announced way back in August 2019, amid much fanfare, given that it was bringing back the Bhaag Milkha Bhaag pair of lead actor Farhan Akhtar with Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. And to be fair, the promotional videos and stills have all been moderately impressive, with Farhan’s physique and boxing workout videos growing on us. However, the film is now stuck for almost a year, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, and no word has come in yet even after several Bollywood movies have made a beeline by announcing their release dates and booking the rest of the calendar for 2021.
So, what’s the latest update on Toofan? Well, BollywoodLife spoke to a source in the distribution network, with close ties to the censor board, and has exclusively learnt that all the post production work on the film is also over and that it was recently screened for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and passed without any cut, with a U/A rating. We were further informed that the film is totalling a massive runtime of 162 minutes (2 hours 42 minutes), which, truth be told, is not surprising for a Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directorial.
That being said, our source adds that despite the film being certified and passed without any cuts, the makers, particularly producer Ritesh Sidhwani and the distributors, Anil Thadani and Zee Studios, are not very enthusiastic about the length and certain portions of how the film has shaped up, plus are skeptical if the audience will be willing to invest so much time in a theatre on a Farhan Akhtar movie, with them about to be spoiled for choice in the coming months courtesy an onslaught of hotly anticipated Bollywood releases hitting screens.
Given all these factors, the makers are now mulling over the possibility of going straight for an OTT release for Toofan and cut their losses. In fact, word is that they’re already in talks with a couple of prestigious OTT digital streaming services to see the best deal they could ink out. So, let’s wait and watch what will be the final fate of Farhan Akhtar and Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Toofan.
