The Legend of Zelda series has been around for 35 years

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series celebrated its 35th anniversary yesterday.

The Legend of Zelda was created by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and was released in Japan on February 21, 1986. Since then, it has become one of the company’s more popular franchises and the series is highly regarded worldwide.

After The Legend of Zelda, a direct sequel to the NES, Link’s Awakening was released on Game Boy and A Link to the Past on SNES was the major mainstream success for the franchise. The series was then translated into three dimensions with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask on Nintendo 64. Since then, several new installments and spin-offs have been released on Nintendo systems.

In 2017, the Zelda series got a second life with Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch and Wii U. The game overhauled the usual structure of the series, in which the overarching game world was interspersed with dungeons. and offered a massive open world to explore. It’s one of the biggest sales successes in the franchise.

Last week, Nintendo announced that the Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be the Switch comes out. Many fans suspect that the company is bringing even more old Zelda games to the Switch over the course of the year to celebrate the anniversary year. When the long-awaited sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be released is not yet known.
