When the Gameboy Advance came onto the market in 2001, director Christopher Nolan probably didn’t even begin to think about it his film “Tenet”. Now the two have come together anyway.

With “Tenet”, Christopher Nolan wanted to create a blockbuster cinema that should provide a unique experience. He did that with many moviegoers, even if not necessarily only in a positive way. “Tenet” caused some confusion, as the storylines suddenly broke off or dialogues became almost incomprehensible due to the film music. Despite or perhaps because of this different type of film, over 1.6 million visitors in Germany decided to visit the partially open cinemas despite the corona pandemic.

According to Nolan, the cinema is the best option for watching Tenet. “This is a film whose picture and sound really have to be enjoyed in cinemas on the big screen,” says the director. The Youtuber Bob Wulff then asked himself “Why actually?” And came up with the idea of copying the time-consuming blockbuster onto a video cassette that fits into a Gameboy Advance.

Kino versus Gameboy – where is Tenet more understandable?

As Engadget reports, Wulff is well aware that this “is possibly the worst way to see Tenet”. So exactly the opposite of what Nolan actually wants. For his little handicraft project, Wulff divided the film into five cassettes so that he could get down every 2.5 hours. In order for this to work at all, YouTube had to make a few adjustments. The film runs in a resolution of 192 x 128 pixels and a bit rate of eight kilobytes per second. That means just six pictures per second.

Even in the cinema, many viewers found it difficult to follow the dialogues due to the special sound mix. Whether this will get better with the old Gameboy loudspeakers may at least be questioned. Wulff always had a funny idea and he even took the trouble to design his own labels for the individual cassettes.
