Twitter boss Jack Dorsey wants to auction a digital copy of the first tweet as NFT shortly before the platform’s 15th birthday. The highest bid is $ 2.5 million.

Non-fungible tokens (NFT) are currently experiencing a small boom. NFT auctions with crypto art or digital collector’s items are currently changing hands, sometimes for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even the venerable British auction house Christie’s has jumped on the bandwagon and is currently holding an auction of an NFT work of art by digital artist Beeple (Mike Winkelmann). Now Twitter boss Jack Dorsey is also trying his luck.

NFT version of the 1st tweet under the hammer

A few days before the microblogging platform’s 15th birthday, Dorsey is auctioning a digital copy of the first tweet via the Valuables website. On March 21, 2006 – the elderly among you will remember – Dorsey (@jack) posted the first short message on Twitter. Content: “just setting up my twttr”. The tweet, packaged as an NFT, could now change hands for a few million dollars.

According to the information on Valuables, current (as of March 7, 2021, 7:00 p.m. CET) $ 2.5 million bid. The highest bidder is Sina Estavi, CEO of Bridge Oracle, as reported by CNBC. Justin Sun, founder of the TRON crypto project, had previously raised his bid from $ 500,000 to $ 2 million. Let’s see if there is still a bidder willing to bid more than $ 2.5 million. He or she would have to add at least $ 250,000 to the previous offer.

The essence of non-fungible tokens as non-exchangeable and therefore unique means that the buyer of the digital tweet version will have a unique copy in their hands. On Valuables it says: “There is only one signed version of the tweet. If the creator approves the sale, you can own it forever ”. The original, Dorsey’s premiere tweet, will, however, continue to be available to the public. Unless the tweet was deleted.

Twitter boss is Bitcoin fan

Dorsey has long been considered a supporter of cryptocurrencies. Most recently, Dorsey and US rapper Jay-Z put more than 19 million euros into a new Bitcoin foundation called BTrust. Only the hashtag #bitcoin can be found in his Twitter bio. Dorsey’s second company, the payment service Square, recently invested $ 170 million in Bitcoin. And observers expect a push from NFT music auctions from Square (Dorsey) buying Tidal (Jay-Z).
