The startup Rebike, which specializes in the rental and sale of used e-bikes, has secured ten million euros in a financing round. The money is to flow into the expansion of e-bike subscriptions.

The Munich startup Rebike Mobility, founded in 2018, has grown significantly in recent months – thanks to the increasing interest in e-bikes. Sales doubled to around seven million euros in 2020. A further doubling is planned for the current year. Now Rebike has successfully closed a Series B financing and has received ten million euros in fresh funds. The company intends to use the money to further boost the flourishing subscription offer for e-bikes.

Investor: E-bikes are the means of transportation of the hour

The financing flowed as equity and debt, as the Handelsblatt reports. The previous shareholders Vorwerk Ventures and STS Ventures are on board again. Bayerische Beteiligungsgesellschaft Bay-BG has recently joined the company. Their investment manager Otto Hopfner sees “enormous potential in the company, in the market and in the product”. After all, according to Hopfner, e-bikes are the means of transport of the hour. People would increasingly want to move sustainably and healthily.

The trend can also be seen in the increasing sales figures. According to the two-wheel industry association, almost two million electric bicycles were sold in Germany in 2020. That was around 43 percent more than in the previous year. Rebike claims to be benefiting “massively from the e-bike boom”. With the offer of e-bike subscriptions launched last year, the company has already won over 1,000 customers. According to the Handelsblatt, the number is set to multiply this year. The number of employees is to double to 100 by the end of the year.

Rebike rents and sells used e-bikes

The Rebike, founded by Sven Erger and Thomas Bernik, started as an internet platform for high-quality, used e-bikes that consumers and manufacturers (demonstration models ) wanted to buy and sell directly. However, business did not work out at first. Eventually Rebike started renting out e-bikes. The bikes withdrawn from the cycle after a few weeks or months are then sold on the platform. In addition, there is the already mentioned offer of electric bikes by subscription. The e-bike startup Dance of the Soundcloud founders and the ADAC also offer one of these.
