Digital citizen participation: EU launches platform for the future of Europe

The EU asks its citizens about ideas for the future via an online platform. A common vision should be created within a year.

are citizens of all Member States invited to submit and discuss ideas on the platform on the future of Europe. The multilingual platform was published at the start of the conference on the future of Europe, as the European Commission announced.

For around a year, in this context EU challenges and priorities are discussed. Nine core topics are given, including climate change, digital change and education. In addition, it is possible to propose further topics.

Submit ideas for digital change

In the “Digital change” section there are already suggestions for the Public funding for open source software, smart technologies in rural areas and for European chip production has been submitted. Registered users can support or comment on suggestions.

The platform can also be used to find events on the topics discussed or to organize them yourself. In addition, European Citizens’ Forums are to take place in order to further discuss the ideas.

Guideline for the future of the EU

The Future Conference also has a plenary assembly with representatives from the European Parliament, the Council, the Commission, national parliaments and citizens.

In this context, conclusions from the conference are to be drawn up by spring 2022. “The result then serves as a guideline for the future direction and policy-making of the EU”, promises the Commission.
