And Mr Trump appears to be of the view that the PM is prepared.

“He called me a few days ago, I will tell you he sounded incredible,” the United States president informed press reporters.

“I was actually surprised… he was ready to go. I’m very surprised to tell you this. It’s like the old Boris, tremendous energy, tremendous drive.”

He added: “Since he called me practically quite near when he left the medical facility, I believe he’s doing excellent.

” He was energetic and so sharp, quite amazing. He’s an unbelievable man. He’s a good friend of ours and a good friend of mine, he enjoys our nation, he enjoys his nation a lot … and they’re fortunate to have him there.”

The Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State Dominic Raab has actually been standing in for Mr Johnson for the last couple of weeks.
