America calls on the leaders of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to cooperate to solve the dam crisis

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan called, on Friday evening, the leaders of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia “to cooperate to solve the Renaissance Dam crisis.”

On the occasion of the appointment of an American envoy to the Horn of Africa, Sullivan said that the American administration is ready “To work with the Allies to advance peace in the Horn of Africa.”

as Sullivan called for an immediate withdrawal of the Eritrean forces from the troubled Tigray region in Ethiopia.

On Friday, Washington appointed diplomat Jeffrey Feltman as its envoy to the Horn of Africa, where he would be tasked with burning files, including the search for a settlement to the crisis in the Ethiopian Tigray region and the regional tension surrounding the building Renaissance Dam.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement: “This appointment confirms the government’s commitment to making an international diplomatic effort to address the interconnected political, security and humanitarian crises in the Horn of Africa.”

Feltman is a veteran diplomat who worked as an assistant to the US Secretary of State for Middle East affairs and then as an undersecretary for the United Nations Secretary-General for political affairs.

Blinken expressed “grave concern” about “the unstable situation in Ethiopia.” Particularly due to the conflict in Tigray.

The United States recently raised its rhetoric denouncing “reports of rape and other unspeakable forms of sexual violence” in the northern region of Ethiopia.

And Washington welcomed the end of March to announce the start of the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from Tigray, and praised the “role” played by US Senator Chris Kunz, who was sent by President Joe Biden earlier to Ethiopia.

But the US government returned and expressed on the statement. Her impatience and called for the “immediate” withdrawal of those forces.

The US Secretary of State also expressed his concern about “the escalation of tension between Ethiopia and Sudan” and “the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.”

On Friday, Khartoum hinted that Addis Ababa will be sued if it continues filling the dam without a tripartite agreement that includes Egypt.

The filling of the dam raises severe tension between Ethiopia and the two downstream countries (Egypt and Sudan), and mediation attempts have so far failed The American administration in resolving the crisis.
