Alonso left the hospital on a bicycle after an accident
Former Formula One (F-1) champion Fernando Alonso has already been discharged from the hospital after jaw surgery, the Alpine team reported on Monday. The Gazzetta dello Sport and the BBC report that Alonso was involved in a road accident last Thursday. An athlete on a bicycle near the Italian border was hit by a car.
Alonso was later taken to a hospital where he underwent jaw surgery. “Alonso spent two days in the hospital so the doctors could observe him, but now he has gone home,” the team said in a statement. “He will dedicate the next few days to rest, but later resume training to prepare for the new season.”
Former world champion for Alonso “Alpine” team , which started under the Renault name last year, joined the 2021 season, replacing Australian Daniel Richtero, who moved to McLaren. Alonso last competed in the F-1 three years ago. The start of the new season in Bahrain is scheduled for March 28, but the teams will test drive from March 12 to 14.
Alonso this season will be the second oldest F-1 pilot, although he has already reached the age of 39. Alfa Romeo pilot Kimi Reikenen from Finland is two years older. Already in December, Alonso in Abu Dhabi passed several tests with his new car. The Frenchman Estebans Okons remains in the team. In the Designers’ Cup, the team, which was called Renault last season, took fifth place in the 2020 season.
