Alexandra Burke speaks up about music industry’s racism
Former The X Element U.K. winner Alexandra Burke has actually exposed she was purchased to ‘bleach her skin’ after discovering popularity in the 2008 season of the TELEVISION skill contest.
Speaking in an honest Instagram video, the 31- year-old singer-songwriter stated was apprised that she would need to work ’10 times more difficult than a white artist’ as she started tape-recording her debut album.
Looking into the microaggressions she experienced from different music label executives throughout her profession, Alexandra described she was even informed to “smile more on Instagram because you come across as aggressive.”
“The music industry is such a funny little place,” she detailed. “I love singing, I love what I do but if it wasn’t for the love that I have for music I definitely wouldn’t be in this industry.”
Alexandra stated she challenged racism from the minute her profession broke out: “I was told, ‘Right, because you are black, you are going to have to work ten times harder than a white artist, because of the colour of your skin… You can’t have braids, you can’t have an afro.’ You can’t have anything that basically is my identity.”
Alexandra stated it was indicated that unless she made such changes, she would not attract white audiences, remembering she was notified that: “‘ You need to have hair, for instance, that attract white people so they can comprehend you much better.”
She added: “That was so hard to absorb. I was informed to bleach my skin which was something I declined to do.”
Alexandra went on to prompt fans to “speak your truth”, adding: ” That’s all we have actually got. We have one life.”
